Gator News: August 2013

August 9th, 2013 | Posted by Swim Gators Webmaster in Gator-only Notices

We are half way through summer and down to only a few swims left in August.  There are only 2 more swim practices at AY Jackson in August, ending on August 15.  Then we move to Bendale Pool located at 1555 Midland Avenue in Scarborough and swim together as one big group on Tuesday August 20 and Tuesday, August 27 from 7-8:30.  The final Sunday swim at Douglas Snow is on Sunday, August 25.

We are still waiting on permit approval for the fall for both AY Jackson and Douglas Snow.   But don’t panic!  This is typical and we should hear from someone in the permit department in the next few weeks.  This also applies to the Saturday swim sessions.  We do not have a permit for these sessions so the registration cannot move forward.  Furthermore, permit fees have increased significantly and a registration fee cannot be created until we know for sure how much it is going to cost to rent the pool for two hours on Saturday mornings.  So hang tight!  We will know soon.

If you are inclined to try out an open water swim, the members of LOST swim every Saturday morning until late September.  The swimmers meet at the foot of Navy Street, by the Lighthouse Pier, at the mouth of 16 Mile Creek in downtown Oakville.  It costs $40.00 to swim all or any Saturdays.  Our own V.P. Elissa Gelleny swims with the group most Saturdays and is happy to answer any questions.  There is a race this Saturday – TOMORROW! , August 10, if anyone is interested, you can still join in!  If you are interested, contact me tonight and I will put you in touch with a participant.   Kelly, Elissa and Katrina are swimming tomorrow- Go Gators!  If you would like to know about any other upcoming races, speak to them – they can tell you all about it!  Check out the LOST website:

This will be our sixth summer of holding Cottage Day on Lake Chemong. Please come as early as possible so that we can fit in the lake swim before lunch. The way it’s worked in the past is that visitor’s bring a picnic lunch for themselves and a healthy side dish/salad for the pot luck dinner. Sara’s dad barbeques the meat course and Sara tries to arrange corn on the cob and watermelon so at least we have the basics. It’s helpful to know approximate numbers so an RSVP system is helpful as well as how many guests are planning to join us for dinner. So please let me or Sara know ASAP if you are interested in joining.  The earlier the day starts, the more likely we’ll be through with dinner before the sun sets. Some prefer not to drive home in the dark.

These are directions to get to Sara’s Father’s house on Lake Chemong outside of Peterborough ..  (Starting at Douglas Snow Aquatic Center).

August 1, 2013

Dear Executive and swimmers,

The fat lady has sung – well almost. As I look back to the past season I am pleased with the successes that were achieved throughout the season.

One huge success was the use of the iPad and an application called Coach’s Eye.  This app allowed swimmers to view their strokes and receive immediate feed-back.  As well, during the Provincials the iPad kept track of the events and an organized list of best times….. this just the beginning.

Another aspect of coaching is the personal relationships that I have built with most swimmers.  I feel this has enabled me to personalize each interaction with swimmers.

At the swim meets I attended this past season, I was not only impressed with the performances but also the camaraderie within the club.  The laughter, the cheering, the support of one another and picture taking. I only hope more swimmers can experience the enjoyment of competition.

One of the best parts of the swim club has to be the social events.  The Wine and Cheese, the bike/picnic, the Sunday coffee get togethers, the winter Sunday brunch, the cross country ski day and the Gators Night Out are some examples of the fantastic interactions within the club.

We were fortunate to be able to take part in a nutrition seminar as well as and a motivational speaker seminar to enhance our knowledge to become better athletes.

This past year, I upgraded my Coaching Certificate to include the NCCP Level 1 course.

This years success would not be possible without the support of the Executive, Sabrina Ng for her popular Saturday sessions and Judie Oliver for her reliability and work out ethics.

Sincerely yours,

Stephen Forsey
