Gator News: October 2013

September 29th, 2013 | Posted by Swim Gators Webmaster in Gator-only Notices

Our swim season has begun and already our freestyle is looking good!  Thank you to Steve and Judie for giving the swimmers lots of feedback regarding our stroke and providing drills to help us feel strong and efficient in the water.  We have had two very informative Saturday swims.  The 9-10 group is learning about hip position and arm technique in breast stroke and the 10-11 group is learning about the importance of body rotation in freestyle.  Thank you Sabrina!  Congratulations to those of you who woke up early to face the loonnng pool at Douglas Snow this morning where we learned all about backstroke kick.  Everyone is welcome to meet at the Second Cup after practice on Sundays for a cup of coffee and conversation.

For the new swimmers to the group, the North York Masters Aquatics Club also known as the Gators, is a non profit group run by an Executive Committee.  We meet once a month to discuss the ongoings of the team and make decisions on your behalf.  The Committee was voted in by the members of the team in June and is comprised of a President: Taina Wilson, Vice President: Elissa Gelleny, Treasurer: Ian Stuart, Secretary: Laurence Alexander and Swimmer’s Liaison: Heather Bruce.  We also have many people that help out behind the scenes, most notably, Webmaster: Kimberly Silk and Social Convenor: Adrianne Morrison.  We will be your EC for the next two years.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to speak to any one of us.

This is going to be exciting year for masters swimming in Canada.  Provincials and Nationals are both being hosted in Windsor, Ontario at a brand new aquatics centre in 2014.  Montreal is hosting the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships next summer.  Our first focus meet will be at Alderwood in January.  Many swimmers have approached me asking for assistance with signing up for a meet.  I am very happy to support swimmers with meet registration, car pooling, meet preparation, etc when the time comes.

If you haven’t done so already, please register yourself with and start logging your yards/metres.  You will earn caps, pins, badges once you begin to accumulate distance.  You will also find information regarding all of the upcoming meets and about swimming in general.  Masters Swim Ontario is also a site full of information.  Both sites contain links to the above mentioned meets.

As it turns out, the MSO fees have not gone up to $40 as anticipated and have remained at $35/ year. We realize that we have collected $5 extra from each of you based on the information we had in the spring. Now that we know, the EC discussed this at length and it was decided that we will not rebate the $5 but instead will take that amount into account when we look at next year’s fees.

It’s time to put away your bathing suit and fancy yourself up for the annual Wine and Cheese party!  This is a particularly special year as we would like to recognize our coaches for some significant milestones that they have achieved.  Thank you to Katrina for hosting the event in her party room.  Please come out and enjoy a drink and snack with the team.  See what everyone looks like with nice clothes on and their hair dry.  Here is a message from Adrianne:

Do you have any qualifications in the world of aquatics?  Are you a qualified strokes and turns judge?  Certified timer or safety marshal?  Do you have your NLS or First Aid Certification?

I am starting a data base that contains all of these achievements.  This will assist us with planning for the Pentathlon and where we can use you best.   Please email me with any kind of certification that you feel would be useful in the future with the team.

Elissa is organizing a First Aid-CPR C certification weekend.  Please let me know if you are interested in joining her and I will forward your name on to her.

When I send out an email to the team I get many supportive, funny and positive emails back.  Thank you, keep them coming!

Here is the Gators October Calendar.  If I forget you to mention you in the Birthday celebrations please let me know.

The website is still a work in progress.  I will try and keep you informed along with the coaches on deck and through Facebook.

All the best,
Heather Bruce
Swimmer’s Liaison
